Hardwood Floor Hardness Ratings
When selecting a hardwood floor there are many questions that a person asks themselves. Which wood flooring will best suit my home? What wood has the grain I'm looking for? Which will stand up best against my children and/or pets? Understanding how wood floors wear and tear can help you choose the best option for you and may help you save some money too.
When choosing your hardwood floor, it is good to know there is a scale that shows you which wood is more resistant to denting than others, the Janka Scale. This scale is used by professional hardwood contractors and defines many different wood species and their ‘hardness'. The testing consists of a piece of wood being penetrated by a steel ball .444 inches in diameter. The Janka scale number it receives is based on the amount of time it takes the ball to penetrate half its diameter. The higher the number, the harder the wood, the more resistant to denting it is. Now you don't need to have the hardest wood to still have long lasting, beautiful wood floors. The most common of hardwood floors used in homes only have a Janka rating of around 1290 to 1450.
One other important thing to note when picking out hardwood flooring is that not all woods are equal. For instance, there is a big difference between Sugar Maple and Ambrosia Maple, with Ambrosia Maple being far lower on the hardness scale than Sugar Maple. You also need to watch for other such similarly sounding names such as Tasmanian Oak, which on the Janka scale only rates about 10 points lower than White Oak, but isn't made from Oak at all. It is actually Eucalyptus under a different name.
Remember, the hardness of your hardwood flooring helps it resist dents, but it's not the only thing that needs to be debated. Going through the process of choosing the best hardwood flooring can be tough. Let the professionals at Dave's Floor Sanding help guide you through the process of choosing and installing a new hardwood floor you to enjoy.
