Did you know...

THE PREMIERE MYTH OF THE MONTH
October 2012
Myth - Beveled Flooring Harbors Dust
Reality - Not if you clean/damp mop
You know, it bugs me when someone says: "Beveled flooring is
such a bad idea. It just creates an ideal spot for dust and junk to
accumulate!"
I am a little biased because I have to admit that bevels are needed
for pre-finished flooring (which my company - does) only as a
safeguard against minor over-wood. You see, for sight applied
finishes you can start with a coarse sander and "mow down" many
milling defects including light over-wood. It is mainly a matter of
the amount of time you have to spend.
For pre-finishing, however, our wood must pass quickly under four
sander heads descending from coarse to fine grit. The downpressure
used on the heads is limited because too much will cause
sand dips. So we cannot always sand out thickness variation. Even
if we could, installation complications like uneven subfloors can
cause over-wood. The option to sand on sight to correct it is gone
and any edge that stands up is sharp. So, a bevel is needed.
HOWEVER - we have had prefinished flooring in our office for about
eight years. I have had it in four rooms of my home for the same
amount of time. The office floor gets frequent cleaning with a damp
application. The home floor is vacuumed regularly and damp
cleaned about every 4-6 weeks. Neither floor shows any signs of
accumulated dirt or other problems, nor have I ever noticed it in
other homes I have visited. (I most always take a discrete look.)
I guess my bottom line is this - if you don't like the look of beveled
flooring that is personal taste and I can't argue. But please, don't
give me that complaint about dirt. In my opinion, it just does not
