Hardwood Floor Repair: Roughness in Finish
Did you just have new flooring installed or refinished and you are noticing there is a roughness to it? Or have you walked on your hardwood flooring in bare or stocking feet and felt a roughness to the surface? This ‘roughness' is not a normal occurrence and should be seen as a sign of an issue that should be looked into sooner than later.
Sometimes this happens when there is a contamination of the finish while the floor is drying. Tiny fibers came also come off of the applicator during the finishing process which can cause flecking, while this can be a common occurrence, it will not create an overall roughness. Dust and dirt in the air can settle on the finish and as it dries will become part of the surface causing the bumpy, roughness. Another problem could be that moisture is trapped beneath the floor boards which causes the wood grain to rise. If this is found to be the case, the moisture problem should be taken care of before any repair work takes place ensuring this will not happen again. Not allowing adequate drying time between layers of the finish or not using enough layers can cause the finish to be rough. There are also times that the flooring is not buffed enough which leads to a roughness to the finish as well.
